SAMUDRA BOOKSHOP INVENTORY & POS
Native Desktop POS & Inventory System
PROJECT OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES.
Cross-platform desktop application built using Vue.js and Tauri for rapid retail sales, barcode scanning, offline-first billing, and centralized inventory tracking.
Samudra Bookshop operates high-traffic retail bookstores requiring lightning-fast POS throughput, reliable barcode scanning, and foolproof inventory accounting without relying on constant internet connectivity.
By choosing Tauri with a Rust core instead of resource-heavy frameworks like Electron, the desktop application boots in under 1 second and consumes less than 40MB of system memory during peak trading periods.
The system seamlessly interfaces with thermal receipt printers via raw ESC/POS commands, USB barcode scanners, and customer-facing auxiliary displays.
SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE.
FRONTEND TIER
Vue 3 Composition API with Vite, Pinia state stores, and keyboard-first shortcuts navigation.
BACKEND & CORE
Rust native backend via Tauri IPC, managing file I/O, device drivers, and background sync threads.
DATA & STORAGE
Local embedded SQL database with transactional integrity and automated daily JSON/SQL backups.
INFRASTRUCTURE & OPS
Native Windows binary (.msi / .exe) with auto-updater service and offline fallback.
KEY FEATURES & DELIVERABLES.
Sub-Second Barcode Scanning & Billing
Rapid item lookup, automatic discount calculations, and immediate thermal receipt dispatch.
Multi-Store Inventory Synchronization
Stock variance tracking, reorder thresholds, and low-inventory warning alerts.
Direct ESC/POS Hardware Printing
Low-level driver communication for fast receipt generation without OS print dialog delay.
Daily Cash Reconciliation
Automated end-of-day register closing, shift summaries, and financial balance verification.
TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS.
CHALLENGES OVERCOME.
Achieving instantaneous receipt printing across multiple printer models without Windows printer queue delay.
Implemented direct serial/USB ESC/POS bytecode dispatching via Rust native channels in Tauri.
Preventing inventory divergence when offline transactions occur simultaneously across registers.
Created an optimistic concurrency model with timestamped delta queues that reconcile upon reconnect.
MEASURABLE RESULTS.
Ultra-compact footprint compared to 200MB+ for Electron alternatives
Minimal hardware impact running on standard retail counter machines
Average transaction completion time from scan to receipt print
TECHNOLOGIES UTILIZED.
